EXPLORING MALI

Auteur: Alexandre Kagaba

On week four, our courageous group of nine persons was taken to vizualise the other exciting part of mali. This eight days journey -if I may for my collegues- wasn’t only for amusement but also for our documentary about mali. We also so how people work very hard to feed their families which was not always the case where sometimes some families would stay for two, three months even worst a year with out any income. To some, we  were reminded our childhood in Africa which some times was not easy to see nor remember.

From bamako, we visited koutiala, segou, siratigibougou, markala and niono. The city that caught my intention was Segou. It is found on the north east of bamako.  Some claim that the word Segou come from “Sikoro,” meaning to the foot of a shea butter tree. Others argue that it was named after Cheikou, a marabou who founded the city, while other theories support the claim that Segou was founded by the Bozo fishermen coming from the north, who established their villages along the Niger River.  We went to visit the niger river on day two and stood on the grounds where the first settler, founder of the Bambara Kingdom’s Koulibaly established the first sedentary villages  at Segou. Now segou is mali’s fourth largest administrative region. I was amaized to see little children fishing and even taking out sand from the see. This was an experience I would not forget.
